So here's the big news from today's Dreamforce keynote... the introduction of the collaboration cloud, described as Salesforce.com's "biggest breakthrough ever."
Marc identifies a fundamental problem with IT in the enterprise-- the disconnect between information, applications, and people. Each operate in silos-- gigabytes of information disconnected from hundreds of business processes disconnected from the day-to-day activities of every employee.
Let's here it straight from Marc Benioff, who asked us all to "join the conversation" in today's keynote.
"When I started Salesforce, I asked why enterprise apps couldn't be more like Amazon," said Marc Benioff. "Now, I wonder why enterprise apps can't be more like Facebook and Twitter."
"Why isn't there a facebook for the enterprise? Why isn't there a twitter for the enterprise? Why do I know more a bout these strangers on Facebook than I know about my own employees and what they're working on?"
He elaborated with some specific examples:
- "I know when my friend goes to see a movie, but I don't know when my VP of sales visits a top customer"
- "I know when I'm tagged on a photo from college, but I don't know when a key document in my enterprise is edited?"
- "Why can I follow the day-to-day activities of Ashton Kutcher, but not the actions of my key executives?"
