Meet the Appirio Authors...And Win a Book While You’re At It

Posted by Appirio On 12/06/2010 05:19:00 AM
In case you don’t get your fill of content in Dreamforce’s 325+ sessions, Developer Zone or Cloudstock, we have yet another offer for you. Each afternoon at the Appirio booth (#613), we’ll be holding a drawing for a signed copy of new books from Appirio’s Chief Architect, Jason Ouellette, and one of our #awesome Technical Consultants, Jeff Douglas (@jeffdonthemic). Simply drop off a business card at our booth and we’ll email you if you’ve won a book!

Jason and Jeff will both be doing Meet the Author presentations at the Moscone West Developer Zone during the week (Jason - 4:30pm on Tues, Dec 7; and Jeff - 3:15pm on Wed, Dec 8). In advance of that, we thought we’d ask them a few questions about the book. Jason’s up first.

Us: Tell us a bit about your book. Why did you write it?
Jason: I wrote the book that I had wanted to read when first learning Force.com development. I wrote it for people who prefer to learn by experimenting with component parts, to be guided through basic factual information and build their own understanding of the higher-level concepts. For a relatively new technology like Force.com, I like that sort of bottoms-up approach better than cookbook recipes, step-by-step how-to guides, and patterns.

Us: What are a few things people should know about the Force.com platform?
Jason: People need to be able to identify applications that are in the "sweet spot" of Force.com, where developing with Force.com really pays off with simpler, more agile and maintainable code than a LAMP, J2EE, or other traditional platform. They should also be aware of how Force.com governor limits work and understand their impact on scaling an application to accommodate more users and data.

Us: Your initial book was released last Dreamforce and an updated electronic version is available this week. What’s new in it?
Jason: There will be a second edition available in print by Summer 2011. However, the new electronic version that comes out on 12/8 includes two new chapters on Batch Apex and Chatter.

Us: Where can people find out more about the book?
Jason: Stop by my Lightening Session at Dreamforce this year, or there’s always the online overview: http://my.safaribooksonline.com/book/programming/forcedotcom/9780321648143
