No Shark Jumping Today

When Marc Benioff said to will.i.am “tell us why you love the cloud,” and the first words out of the superstar’s mouth were “the cloud is now and the future,” I thought that Dreamforce was in danger of jumping the shark.  But then he went on to ask: “what will happen when I can create in the cloud? And people can hear what I’m creating and can contribute and collaborate with me?”

Indeed. The shark-jumping will have to wait.

In its purest form, building cloud-based solutions is - like composing music - a creative endeavor.  Those of us who live our day-to-day lives thinking about how to build business solutions may not think of ourselves as creative, and in some cases our efforts reflect that.  But if we reframe the activity as a collaborative enterprise in which each participant is refining or riffing on that which another has created, and then when you think about the new instruments - like database.com and chatter.com - that are being introduced at a dizzying pace, one cannot help but get excited at the prospects ahead.

All that is required now is the creation of a community where developers from across the cloud can come together to make that sweet music.  I wonder what it will be called?
