No Shark Jumping Today

Posted by Appirio On 12/07/2010 07:30:00 PM
When Marc Benioff said to will.i.am “tell us why you love the cloud,” and the first words out of the superstar’s mouth were “the cloud is now and the future,” I thought that Dreamforce was in danger of jumping the shark.  But then he went on to ask: “what will happen when I can create in the cloud? And people can hear what I’m creating and can contribute and collaborate with me?”

Indeed. The shark-jumping will have to wait.

In its purest form, building cloud-based solutions is - like composing music - a creative endeavor.  Those of us who live our day-to-day lives thinking about how to build business solutions may not think of ourselves as creative, and in some cases our efforts reflect that.  But if we reframe the activity as a collaborative enterprise in which each participant is refining or riffing on that which another has created, and then when you think about the new instruments - like database.com and chatter.com - that are being introduced at a dizzying pace, one cannot help but get excited at the prospects ahead.

All that is required now is the creation of a community where developers from across the cloud can come together to make that sweet music.  I wonder what it will be called?

Dreamforce Kickoff Impressions

Posted by Tim Parker On 12/07/2010 12:49:00 PM

This is my third Dreamforce, and I'm still amazed at the level of energy and passion that the presenters and attendees have. Last night the expo was full of people clearly excited to be here, and having great conversations about ways they can transform their business.
This morning Salesforce threw gasoline on all that excitement - kicking off the opening keynote with a performance by will.i.am - followed up by some exciting news which Ryan Nichols captured here.

As the week goes on - I'll be checking in here with more updates and info from the various sessions.

If you haven't already - be sure to stop by the Appirio booth and pick up your t-shirt. We're giving away $1000 cash to 3 lucky people on Wednesday. They're going fast - get yours before they're gone!

One last thought - actually a request - if you haven't already, please stop by the fantastic folks at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. Just for stopping by and entering your name and email address - $5 will be donated on your behalf. It's a fantastic cause - and you can help contribute. To learn more about this great cause - please visit their site http://www.ucsfbenioffchildrens.org.

Dreamforce 2010 - Keynote Day 1

Posted by Appirio On 12/07/2010 11:53:00 AM
Ryan Nichols

Today’s Dreamforce keynote was about tapping into trends that are even bigger than salesforce.com. The opening video described the astronomic growth of facebook and twitter in the consumer space. The soundtrack was a special song by global super-star will.i.am, telling us that “this is your chance to own it” when it comes to the opportunities in front of us. Benioff pulled not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE different mobile internet devices out of his pockets. Whatever happened to our little conference on customer relationship management?

Even the technology announcements were bigger than how people usually think about salesforce.com. Sure, Salesforce continues to push forward its industry-leading namesake CRM application. The Sales Cloud announcements honestly deserve their own conference (over 50 new features), where we’d talk a lot less about “cloud” and a lot more about the productivity of salespeople. The improvements to reporting, dashboards, chatter, and mobile accessibility will be appreciated by every one of Salesforce’s 100,000 customers.

Though this is my second consecutive Dreamforce, in many ways, I feel like it’s my third.

You see, in 2008, I was speaking at a different conference that week, but Dreamforce still made a huge impression on me.  I was in Denver, and was charged with closing out Day One the Defrag conference.  The topic was Social Computing in the Enterprise, and I was talking about what social computing vendors would have to do in order to bridge the gap to become enterprise ready.  One of the critical success factors I mentioned was that to become enterprise-grade, social computing applications needed to be linked to enterprise applications so as to expose social information to business users in context.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco that same day Salesforce announced that it was integrating with Facebook. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was an Appirio application that was featured in the keynote on extending the cloud. If you are really curious, check out this “vintage” Appirio web page describing the application.

I found out about the announcement minutes before I delivered my talk, and adjusted my speech accordingly (I had planned to say that such integration would happen within the year).  What I did know was that Salesforce was moving much faster pace than I believed it to be; and what I came to learn was that Appirio was driving much of the innovation.

Fast forward to last year’s Dreamforce, when I was able to attend as part of the analyst contingent. Earlier in the year there was the Twitter Integration announcement, and upon arrival I was handed a news briefing describing Chatter.  It seemed the logical next step. I wrote at the time that, based on my conversations with customers at the conference, “the value proposition of Chatter was lost on many customers in attendance” (see this Saugatuck trip report - registration required).  This in spite of the spontaneous applause that greeted Narinder when he demonstrated how how Chatter could be used as part of the platform to facilitate collaboration across cloud applications (at minute 26:45 of this video).

And now I’m back.  Earlier today, when I registered, I felt that same energy and excitement that I did last year. I’m fortunate enough to be part of the Appirio team, as Director of Appirio’s Cloud Strategy Center of Excellence, and over the course of the past year, in our own Salesforce environment at Appirio, I’ve witnessed the introduction of Chatter Groups, recommended Chatter follows and the extension of the core Salesforce search functionality to Chatter.  And, in talking to customers I’ve learned that they have figured out how Chatter can create business value in their organizations.  I can’t wait to hear more Chatter stories about how they have put it to use in their own organizations. I’m also looking forward to this week’s keynotes, and to hearing from Salesforce about their plans to continue executing on that trend that I identified two years ago.

Come visit me and my colleagues at the Appirio booth, where we have t-shirts  - and more - in store for you.  And follow me here and in the Dreamforce Chatter app.  I’ll be posting! Enjoy the conference!

What is this Black and White Square Thing? And Why Do I Care?

Posted by Appirio On 12/06/2010 02:05:00 PM
By now you have probably come across something that looks similar to the image above: a matrix of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. This is a QR code, and it can be used to encoded text, a URL or any other type of data. These codes are amazing solutions for linking objects, places, or almost anything in the physical world to content and context on the Internet.

Using a QR code is easy. Just download one of the many QR reader Apps on your smartphone, open the app, and use your phones camera to place the QR code in the middle of the screen. The application will ask you if you want to go to the URL, and you just have to say “yes.”

This technology isn’t new, and was actually created to keep track of auto-parts, but now that these tags can be easily created, they take on a whole new meaning and use case. QR codes provide the ideal solution for linking the real world to context provided by the Internet. Restaurants can show patrons where to access their menu online, marketers can transfer their latest collateral to prospects without handing them paper, brands can show customers the latest deal right in the store, or companies can setup games at conventions to give attendees a chance to win a smartphone of their choice...WAIT WHAT!?!

More on that last one to come from Appirio at this years Dreamforce.  To get started scan the code above !

Introducing [insert name here]

Dave Messinger

It is my pleasure to introduce you to our new, yet to be named community. We are launching it into beta this week at Dreamforce and the first task we have put out to the community is to name it. What better way to launch an open community, then to have the community name itself? (Plus a $2000 prize for the winning name doesn’t hurt either.)

The purpose of this site will be to build a cross cloud community of developers interested in solving and discussing cloud based problems. It will recognize and reward the best and brightest cloud programmers and enthusiasts from across the globe. Challenges will be posted asking the community to solve a variety of problems; if you solve the challenge, you win the prize. In addition to winning money, as a registered member you will have a public profile to show off your work, awards, skills and recognition earned in the community.

We are planning to redesign and launch the community in January, but we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to show the concept at the premier cloud conference, Dreamforce, and sign up some early participants. Take an early peek at the new site mockups (large file 40 MB) to get an idea what the site will be about and what profiles will look like.

The site will be powered by Appirio, but we hope to add many other sponsors over time. So register to see new challenges, win some money and let us know what you think!

Meet the Appirio Authors...And Win a Book While You’re At It

Posted by Appirio On 12/06/2010 05:19:00 AM
In case you don’t get your fill of content in Dreamforce’s 325+ sessions, Developer Zone or Cloudstock, we have yet another offer for you. Each afternoon at the Appirio booth (#613), we’ll be holding a drawing for a signed copy of new books from Appirio’s Chief Architect, Jason Ouellette, and one of our #awesome Technical Consultants, Jeff Douglas (@jeffdonthemic). Simply drop off a business card at our booth and we’ll email you if you’ve won a book!

Jason and Jeff will both be doing Meet the Author presentations at the Moscone West Developer Zone during the week (Jason - 4:30pm on Tues, Dec 7; and Jeff - 3:15pm on Wed, Dec 8). In advance of that, we thought we’d ask them a few questions about the book. Jason’s up first.

Us: Tell us a bit about your book. Why did you write it?
Jason: I wrote the book that I had wanted to read when first learning Force.com development. I wrote it for people who prefer to learn by experimenting with component parts, to be guided through basic factual information and build their own understanding of the higher-level concepts. For a relatively new technology like Force.com, I like that sort of bottoms-up approach better than cookbook recipes, step-by-step how-to guides, and patterns.

Us: What are a few things people should know about the Force.com platform?
Jason: People need to be able to identify applications that are in the "sweet spot" of Force.com, where developing with Force.com really pays off with simpler, more agile and maintainable code than a LAMP, J2EE, or other traditional platform. They should also be aware of how Force.com governor limits work and understand their impact on scaling an application to accommodate more users and data.

Us: Your initial book was released last Dreamforce and an updated electronic version is available this week. What’s new in it?
Jason: There will be a second edition available in print by Summer 2011. However, the new electronic version that comes out on 12/8 includes two new chapters on Batch Apex and Chatter.

Us: Where can people find out more about the book?
Jason: Stop by my Lightening Session at Dreamforce this year, or there’s always the online overview: http://my.safaribooksonline.com/book/programming/forcedotcom/9780321648143

Recommended Sessions for Dreamforce 10

Posted by Appirio On 12/04/2010 02:55:00 PM
With Dreamforce quickly approaching, we wanted to give you a guide to the sessions that we think will be of greatest interest. There are over 320 sessions to chose from and we know from personal experience that it can be an overwhelming task to prune through the list and find the gems.

So, over the next few days, we'll be presenting our top sessions at Dreamforce 2010.

In the spirit of full disclosure, most of the sessions we've highlighted feature our customers. We're proud of what our customers have achieved and are excited that so many of them are being featured at Dreamforce!

Appirio's own Jeff Douglas has been working with Salesforce.com and VMware for the last couple months putting together a cool demo of an existing on-premise Java app to show how easy it is to move apps to the cloud.

He'll be presenting this VMForce app in the session “VMforce: The Trusted Enterprise Platform as a Service” on Wed 12/8 @ 1:45pm.

The demo in Jeff's words:
I use Spring STS and Spring Roo to build and test my apps locally before deploying them (with one click!) to the cloud. The app uses the Spring 3 framework with standard POJOs, JSPs and Servlets just like any other Java app. The best part is that whether running locally or in the cloud, I have the same access to the Force.com Database, analytics and collaboration with Chatter. I also love the fact that I don’t have to worry about my server stack, maintaining app server configurations or software to install or patch!

Be sure to check it out!
